Software Generation Ltd (SGL), a leading provider of content archive and storage management software for media and entertainment, has today announced a significant sale to Sky Italia, a digital satellite television platform owned by News Corporation.
Sky Italia has integrated FlashNet, SGL's content storage and archive management software, in a multiple control system architecture, for the transfer of data into and out of the archive at the highest possible speeds, under the control of TMD's Mediaflex asset management system and Harris ADC transmission automation. The Sky Italia configuration includes six FlashNet cluster nodes that run identical software driven by a Microsoft SQL database. Each node can perform any task, and is connected via a switch to Omneon'sMediaGrid content storage system. In the Sky Italia configuration, MediaGrid provides 100TB of mirrored (50TB usable) storage with 28TB allocated for the nearline archive. The library is a SpectraLogic T950, which includes six LT04 tape drives.
The project sees data archived from a number of locations including, Omneon Spectrum servers (for transmission and ingest) and Thomson Grass Valley Profile servers. Following initial archive to disk, data is transferred to tape under the control of SGL's StorageManager, a component of FlashNet that allows Sky Italia operators to apply lifecycle rules to move, copy and manage material within the archive storage hierarchy, based on their specific business requirements. "FlashNet has been an excellent choice for Sky Italia. The software meets our complex workflow requirements, it's stable, reliable and is supported very well by SGL," said Ben Leenders, Sky's Engineering Manager.
Bernie Walsh, SGL's Joint Managing Director commented, "We are delighted to announce this sale to Sky Italia. This is a significant project that includes technology provided by some of the industry's major players. The flexibility of FlashNet means that it can easily be integrated into the archive workflow providing greater security and guaranteed business benefits."
Software Generation Limited is a privately held archive management software company headquartered in Fareham, England. SGL has been in business since 1989 and its flagship FlashNet product is installed in over 4,500 customer sites around the world.
