Las Vegas, NAB, Booth SU8508 - 20th April 2009 - Software Generation Ltd (SGL), a leading provider of content archive and storage management software for media and entertainment, has been selected by the United States' Public Broadcasting Service (PBS), headquartered in Arlington, VA., to provide a fully integrated digital archive. This significant project marks the first deployment of FlashBrowse, SGL's enterprise archive viewing tool, which further expands the capabilities of the Media Operation Center (MOC) solution.
The SGL workflow in the MOC includes direct integration with Avid ISIS and automated integration points through Signiant file management interfaces, for files archived from Omneon and Harris Nexio servers, as well as files produced by the RadiantGrid transcoders.
On arrival at the MOC, all media is processed and packaged for distribution. The MOC ingests and QCs high resolution files for multiple distribution purposes. For broadcast distribution this includes ingest, flattening and internal editing services. The flattening process involves compiling all the components of the program, adding elements such as icons ratings, v-chips and bugs and compressing the file for air.
The high resolution (Avid DNx 145) file is sent to the RadiantGrid transcoding solution and/or to the broadcast servers for packaging and is then archived to a Quantum Scalar10k tape library with 1300 LT0 slots through the SGL FlashBrowse interface. After the variations of file formats are created from the transcoder, they are also archived by FlashNet using the same FlashBrowse application, along with broadcast quality (medium resolution) packaged files for playout. Once the file is fully packaged the MOC transfers it to the PBS Network Operations Center (NOC) for distribution.
For online distribution the MOC supports editing and transcoding services for Interactive (General Audience and PBS Kids), VOD and online third-party syndication. This includes over 30 codec variations for delivery to services such as iTunes, YouTube, HULU, Comcast, among others.
Wendy Allen, PBS Senior Director Media Operations & Media Library comments, "The MOC selected SGL because the company provides an open solution, which is increasingly important as the MOC moves to a multi-platform distribution model. The MOC archives the high and medium resolution file for broadcast, all online file formats including flash and h.264 as well as online syndication and VOD material, using a single FlashBrowse interface."
Mickey Charles, SGL's VP Americas adds, "For many years SGL has been providing archive and content management solutions to PBS stations all over the US, and we are delighted to announce this project with MOC, which marks the first SGL installation at the PBS Headquarters. The simple and flexible approach we have taken with FlashBrowse means that the core FlashNet functionality managing the archive can adapt to PBS's changing environment as new distribution models arise. Additionally the use of APIs has been a key element of the MOC workflow. SGL delivers an open solution that can handle multiple formats, allow integration with multiple applications and can be expanded transparently as the archive continues to grow."
