When major
business news network CNBC Asia Pacific took the decision in mid-2005 to
migrate to a non-linear workflow, the network decided to opt for a single
provider for all elements of the system. That provider was Avid, and the
Avid Archive solution played a key role in the decision. "We have been
working with Avid for a number of years now," says Peter Juno, Senior
Vice President & Director of Operations, "and following our assessment
of the Avid system we decided it was the only solution that fitted all of
our requirements." CNBC's newsroom uses an Avid Unity system with Avid Airspeeds, Newscutters, MediaManager and TransferManager to control and process each day's material. Short-life material is backed up via FlashNet to a rotating backup group using the integrated 'round robin' functionality which transfers data to several tape groups simultaneously for fast backup. Material that no longer needs to be stored locally is archived to deeper storage via FlashNet batch archive procedures; the storage is a FlashNet-controlled StorageTek SL500 tape library with LTO2 drives. Archives are initiated on a clip-by-clip basis by the editors directly from the Avid application. |

When clips are required for restore, CNBC editors search on specific metadata that they have tailored to their own requirements. Clips can then be restored in one of two ways, either using MediaManager directly or by using SGL's Windows Explorer plugin. Using the plugin, a Windows Explorer-style window lists all of the clips in the archive. The editor can filter the list of clips to return only those applicable to their search. To restore the clip, the editor simply drags it to the Avid Restore workspace, from where it can be moved to the editor's application using standard Avid transfers. All metadata and effects that were part of the original clip are preserved throughout the archive and restore processes. According to Mr. Juno, SGL FlashNet and the Avid Archive solution play a major role in CNBC's new implementation. He concludes: "SGL FlashNet is a key component in our end-to-end non-linear workflow." |
